Newborn preparation

When is the best time to photography my newborn?

Newborn sessions are scheduled within the first 10 days of babys arrival. This might seem early for many, but its actually the only way to get those poses you see in many of the photos. The baby is mostly sleeping, and they have not developed their muscles yet, so you can pose them in all those cute poses. You'd be surprised on how fast they become strong!

If your baby is older than 2 weeks, we can still do it, but the poses are more limited and the baby might be more awake, and cry more.

Newborn sessions are best done in the morning. Depending on your babys schedule, around 8am and 9am.

When should I schedule the session?

As soon as you find out the due date! We will be in close contact the weeks before and I will try to keep my schedule as open as possible to accomodate an earlier/later arrival. Its very important you let me know as soon as its time.

What can I expect during the session?

Expect to be exhausted, but to have a fun time! It will be messy, there will be #1s and #2s done, and spit ups. There will be crying and lots of patience. But, in spite off all that, it will be great!

What can I do to prepare?

Baby should be fed when I get there, its good if you time it in to almost finished feeding by the time I get there for a happy sleepy baby. If we are doing posed photos we will do them first if baby is sleeping. I will set up my props and backgrounds. If baby isn't sleeping we will do lifestyle shots first.

The heater needs to be pumped up so that we adults are sweating, in order for the baby to be comfortable naked, and all props you want to incorporate should be ready for use. I provide a full getting ready list before the session so you can prepare.

I want posed photos, but Im scared to let anyone else to hold baby.

If you are scheduling a newborn session, you need to be comfortable me handling your little one. And you can trust me! Safety is my #1 priority! I will carry, pose and swaddle, and I do it well! I love babies!

Do i have to do posed photos?

Not everyone is a fan of the posed photos with use of props and hats, and thats fine. When I send you the questionaire I ask these types of things. You can choose to get posed photos with props, more natural "lifestyle" photos, or a mix of both.

What to Wear

I like to have people come to my session and be who they are! If you want the whole family to wear Hawaii shirts thats fine, If one person wants to wear red stripes and the other one orange dots, Im okay with that.

Having said that, I am willing to give general guidelines as to aestetically looks best for photos! You can also browse Pinterest.com for lots of inspiration on what to wear.

Generally stay away from mixing patterns because it can look too busy, Black shirt because the details dissappear or White shirt for the same reason, its easy to blow highlights out. Also, wearing the exact same color might look funny. Instead try to wear the sam "shade" as eachother. For example, erathy tones, pastels etc.

CHILDREN

I LOVE hats! And if you want to focus on a child, try to have the child wear patterns while parents have solid colours. That way The child will "stick out".

MATERNITY

Something that highlights the bump! I love a dress on a mama to be. A tunic with a bowtie over the bump.

NEWBORNS

Stay away from putting an outfit on the newborn. Most clothes are too big and the baby looks like he is drowning in them. Newborns do best in the nude, perhaps wrapped in a blanket or cheesecloth. If you dont want baby to be completely naked, at least consider to only wear diaper and diapercover.

This is basically the only time in their life its okay to be photographed bare baked, take advantage of it! Its beautiful, so natural and gives beautiful photographs!
